ABOUT

01 · WHY THIS EXISTS

I track 170g of protein a day. Most of it comes from actual cooking: chicken, egg whites, Greek yogurt. That system holds until the day stops cooperating: the 06:10 flight, the meeting that eats lunch, the fridge at 23:40. For those hours the options were the dessert aisle, or jerky and sadness. The category’s own fans describe their bars as sickly sweet overpriced candy, and keep buying them, because those are the choices.

So I built the thing I couldn’t find: puffed rice and protein crisps around a dense protein core, seasoned like food where the flavor is savory, and sweetened gently, with allulose, where the flavor wants it. None of the candy engineering. The bar is the supplement for the hours that don’t cooperate. The chicken keeps its job.

We also wrote down the reasons, and the research behind them. They’re the next section.

02 · SEVEN REASONS TO BUY THIS BAR

Each one is backed by someone who doesn’t work here. Every quote links to its source. None of the people quoted endorse Ration; they said what they said, and we built accordingly.

REASON NO. 1CANDY-SWEET BARS ARE BUILT TO MAKE YOU WANT ANOTHER.

You’re eating “protein” to stay on target, and the hyper-sweet bar leaves you hungrier and reaching for a second. That’s not an accident. Industrial sweetness has a job, and the job is more.

“Tasty foods are much easier to eat in excess and much harder to eat in small quantities…”

DR. MIKE ISRAETEL ·JUGGERNAUT TRAINING SYSTEMS, 2015

The NIH ran the controlled version of that question: same people, sugar, fat, fiber, and carbs matched, ultra-processed food on one arm and minimally processed on the other. The finding, in their words:

“…that ultra-processed foods cause people to eat too many calories and gain weight.”

KEVIN D. HALL, PHD · NIH ·2019

On the ultra-processed diet, participants ate about 500 more calories a day. Ration is dialed down on purpose, so one bar feels like enough. Ration is processed food. The difference is which levers we refuse to pull.

REASON NO. 2A DAILY BAR HAS TO SURVIVE DAY FOUR.

By midweek of the same candy-flavored bar, you’re done with it, and a protein target you can’t stomach is a target you’ll miss. The food chemists behind these bars describe the same wall: around day four the intensity reads as too sweet, too much, and the wrapper stays closed. We’re not the only ones tired of the frosting.

“…for a break from the endless onslaught of sweetness.”

SPORKED, ON SAVORY PROTEIN BARS ·2026

Ration’s flavors are built for repetition: food notes, dosed so day four tastes like day one.

REASON NO. 3HALF THE AISLE RUNS CANDY-BAR SUGAR.

You’re counting calories and sugar, and a lot of bars quietly blow the budget. The dietitians already said it plainly:

“It’s essentially dessert with a sprinkle of protein and fiber to dress it up.”

TERRY TATEOSSIAN · ISSA NUTRITIONIST ·EAT THIS, NOT THAT, 2025 SAID OF A MAINSTREAM PROTEIN BAR WITH 21G ADDED SUGAR

“Are protein bars really just candy bars in disguise?”

HARVARD HEALTH PUBLISHING · HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL ·2015 THE HEADLINE, VERBATIM

Ration declares 0g added sugar on every bar. Total sugars run <1g to 4g per bar, and what sugar there is comes from the food itself, like the dried tart cherries in the cherry bar. The numbers you track stay the numbers you planned.

REASON NO. 4THE SMARTEST PEOPLE IN FITNESS TREAT BARS AS FUEL.

Israetel’s frame for eating toward a number splits meals into business and fun. Most are business.

“You just have to consider yourself with a ratio and have mostly business meals and a few fun meals. Then it’s kind of like a big hack.”

DR. MIKE ISRAETEL ·GQ REAL LIFE DIET, 2025

The experts already eat bars as fuel, on purpose, most mornings. They just put up with the frosting. We think a bar built for the business-meal job should taste like food, so we built that one.

REASON NO. 5MAXED-OUT SWEETNESS CAN BACKFIRE, CALORIES OR NOT.

Zero-sugar usually means the sweetness knob turned all the way up. In a 75-person randomized trial at USC’s Keck School of Medicine (2025), a calorie-free sweetener increased hunger and the brain’s hunger signaling compared with sugar, and didn’t trigger the fullness hormones sugar does. Sweetness at maximum has effects, calories or not.

Ration goes the other way: we sweeten gently, with allulose, only where the flavor wants it, so one bar is the end of it.

REASON NO. 6ONE HONEST FLAVOR TELLS YOU “ENOUGH.”

There’s a name for why there’s always room for dessert: sensory-specific satiety. One clear flavor reaches its satisfaction point and you stop. A stack of engineered sweet notes never gets there; it keeps handing you the next bite. Toasted oat or tart cherry hits its note and stops. So do you.

REASON NO. 7LESS SWEET STILL TASTES GOOD.

The worry: does a less-sweet bar taste like cardboard? No. The point was never to strip flavor out, only the knobs-at-11 engineering. A food writer put the brief better than we did:

“I’ve long wanted a protein bar that isn’t trying to be candy… and a savory flavor profile would be nice, too.”

LUKAS VOLGER · COOKBOOK AUTHOR ·2024

So that’s the batch: Toasted Oat · Sea Salt and Tart Cherry · Almond carry real, gentle sweetness. Sharp Cheddar and Jalapeno Cheddar are fully savory. All four taste like something you’d choose on purpose.

03 · THE SPEC

25g protein. 170 to 200 calories. Sweetness dialed down, not dessert: R-01 and R-02 carry a real, gentle sweetness, R-03 and R-04 are fully savory, and none of them are candy. Puffed rice and protein crisps for volume, because a bar you eat every day should feel like eating something.

THE HONEST PART

04 · THE HONEST PART
Batch 001 is our first run, and it will be small. The list gets first access, and what people actually order decides how much of each flavor we make. If we ever take a pre-order, nobody’s card gets charged unless their flavor actually goes into production. No fake countdowns, no fake stock counters. If we say a run is small, it’s because it is.

05 · THE NAME

A ration is food you plan around: a known quantity, issued in boxes, eaten on schedule. For people who track, that’s what a protein bar already is. We named the product after the job.
